Description

The “Masia” is the metal structure that holds the small zilia, the cymbals of the Byzantines.

This percussion instrument, known since the Byzantine era, is now found exclusively in Thrace, primarily in Kastanies, Marasia, and Nea Vyssa in the Evros region. It is traditionally used during Christmas, New Year’s, and Epiphany, when children incorporate it alongside daires (tambourines) as they go caroling.

Historically, it was a percussion instrument that accompanied the sounds of the bagpipe and other musical instruments during festivities and major celebrations.

Design: Angeliki Giannakidou for Riza.
